Chapter 14

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the desert began to cool, and the group prepared to continue their journey. Jack mounted his camel, feeling more comfortable than he had during their first trek. The rhythm of the desert travel was becoming familiar to him.

For several days, they traveled like this, resting during the heat of the day and moving through the cooler night. The desert landscape, with its vast dunes and rocky outcrops, seemed endless, but the beauty of the night sky, filled with stars, made the journey almost magical.

Each night, they faced the occasional desert monster, from scorpion-like creatures with venomous stingers to sand serpents that slithered silently through the dunes. The adventurers handled these threats with practiced ease. Garrick led the group with confidence, his axe swinging with deadly precision, while Mira used her magical abilities to bolster their defenses and heal any minor injuries.

Jack found himself spending more time with Mira, learning about her background and her experiences as an adventurer. During one quiet day, as they rested by a small campfire, she shared stories of her travels.

"You know," she said, poking the fire with a stick, "I've been all over this desert, seen things that would make most people's hair stand on end."

Jack smiled, intrigued. "Like what?"

"Well, there was this one time," Mira began, her eyes gleaming with excitement, "when we stumbled upon an ancient temple buried under the sand. It was filled with traps and guardians, but also incredible treasures. We barely made it out alive."

Jack listened intently, admiring her bravery and skill. "Sounds like you've had quite the adventures. How do you manage to stay so calm during the fights?"

Mira shrugged, a modest smile on her face. "Experience, I guess. And a good team. We've been through a lot together. But I have to admit, having someone like you around makes things easier."

Jack chuckled. "I'm just glad I can help. These desert monsters are something else."

One evening, as they rode side by side, Mira pointed to a distant range of mountains. "We're getting close. The labyrinth entrance should be somewhere in those hills."

The group pressed on, the camels' steady pace carrying them ever closer to their destination. The nights grew cooler, and the landscape gradually changed from endless dunes to more rugged terrain. Elara, who had been ranging around the group as she scouted, was the first to recognize the telltale signs that they were being followed. She returned quickly, her conversation with Garrick intense as she pointed to the large clouds of dust being kicked up into the night air, obscuring the twinkling stars. Jack wondered how she had spotted the disturbance, but then she was a scout with considerable experience in these matters.

Curious and concerned, Jack urged his camel forward to join the conversation with Garrick. As he approached, Garrick nodded to him. "There’s a rather large group behind us," Garrick said, glancing back toward the dust cloud. "But if we keep up this pace, we'll reach the entrance to the labyrinth before they catch up.
